The restoration of the weir will provide a major opportunity to enhance sporting facilities for many users of the river without detracting from the careful restoration of the weir structure. The Trust is working with the Environment Agency and with partners, British Canoeing and Westcountry Rivers Trust, to improve facilities for all interest groups, some of whom may have conflicting interests in river usage. At the same time, the restoration provides the opportunity to improve the environment of the weir for fish and improve fish passage both up and down river, it may also be possible to incorporate fish counting equipment and river cameras into the restored weir structure. Broad consensus has been reached on which facilities might be built into the restoration, and Historic England have recognised this approach as a blueprint for reconciling differing interests when working on projects to restore important heritage assets.
